Each generation has newer NVDEC/NVENC video hardware acceleration, totally separate from the conventional GPU texture/shading hardware. E.g, your GTX-660 is 1st gen "Maxwell", a GTX-1080 is 4th gen "Pascal", and the current version is 7th gen "Ampere".
The video acceleration logic is a totally separate hardware IP block. The early versions of Quick Sync and NVENC had many limitations. It's possible by asking Resolve to use GPU encoding you are preventing it from using Quick Sync which slows it down. Resolve can also use that - provided you don't force it to use something less efficient. The fact that Power Director encodes much faster implies it is using Quick Sync. If your CPU is Intel, it should have Quick Sync acceleration, first introduced on Intel's "Sandy Bridge" series around 2011. The first version was on the "Kepler"-series, around 2012. The NVENC encoder exists in many versions. When, on the same PC, I use PowerDirector it takes 12 minutes to render almost exactly the same video.Did I forget to set something in Davinci?
